So, for years Ryan and I went "wheeling" all of the time. Ryan had a really sweet Land cruiser and we spent the first few years of our married lives practically living in Moab. It was so much fun! Ryan went on to complete in UROC, and he was really quite good. Sometimes is scared me pretty bad, especially when they would have to climb some big rock heading almost straight up, with a huge chance of rolling over, AND they were already right on the ledge and could drop about 15 feet! YIKES!
Every year Ryan and I went to Moab Jeep Safari. It was over Easter weekend. One year we didn't have a vehicle. Ryan was in the middle of taking his apart and thinking about re-building it. 2 weeks before Easter weekend, Ryan decided we would go. I was wondering how in the world that would be possible. We only had all the parts, but NOTHING was put together. I mean the body wasn't even on the frame, and the engine was no where near either. We didn't even know if the engine worked for sure.
Ryan spent countless hours after work. We would usually be at the shop until 2 am. Everyday Jeff would come out and check on the progress. I don't think anyone thought it was possible for Ryan to build an entire vehicle in 2 weeks. I didn't even know he knew how! It just shows what a genius he is! He had read some magazines and stuff before, so he thought he should be able to do it.
The night before Safari, I painted the Land Cruiser while Ryan wired the engine. We showed up to the shop early in the morning for final touches. Still not even know if it would run. When our friend Chris Holley showed up to the shop to load his Bronco and the Land Cruiser on to the trailer to haul down, it was time for the true test. Ryan jumped in and fired it right up! We were so excited! He drove it right up on the trailer and then all over trails in Moab! It ran perfectly and could crawl over rocks better than ever! I was impressed!
Ryan's Dad and Dave Told because Ryan's sponsors in competition. We had a lot of fun. After a while Ryan and Chris decided to join forces and became one of the best teams. Chris would drive his Bronco and Ryan was his spotter. Ryan would guide him through the obstacles and throw the rocks under the tires, or pull the Bronco with a strap over rocks. They were so good! We competed in St. George, Cedar City & Vernal, UT and Farmington, New Mexico several times. When it was time for us to retire from the sport Ryan and Chris had finished with a 3rd place trophy, in Nationals and 5th in the world (there really were people that came from other Countries to compete!) We miss it every once in a while, but it was time for Ryan to pass his passion and knowledge on to someone else.......His Dad!
It didn't take long before Jeff started building his own Bronco. He really has done a great job! A few of Jeff's friends have also bought Jeep's to go along. It it really fun to watch these guys get into it. Now "the old guys" (forgive me Jeff!), head to Moab frequently and they have a lot of fun. I had a good laugh when Ryan would get calls from Dave Told and Jim Brisk (2 of Jeff's friends), for help and advise on buying a Jeep. They would have Ryan go through the ads and tell them which was best. It was really quite a hoot!Every year Ryan and I went to Moab Jeep Safari. It was over Easter weekend. The other day when we pulled up at Jeff and Lynne's this is what we arrived to see. Jeff was out working on his Bronco, WITH his umbrella to give him some shade. Ryan and I had a good laugh about it! Ryan said something along the lines of "Old Man wheeling". It is all in jest! We love watching Jeff enjoy this. For now, we will just have to live vicariously through his adventures! :)
