News from UTAH

Well, I came here thinking that we just had a little adjustment to do and then we would head back home. I am so glad that I pushed for admittance. Last night Dawson spiked a fever and despite the pressure change, screamed all night long. This morning when I got here they told me that he was probably going to need surgery. Then I heard that he wouldn't, then I heard that he has a shunt infection, then I heard that he didn't. Oh, the joys of 3 different nurses!

Dr. Walker finally came in and talked to me. They checked his CSF to see if there was any infection in his shunt. It does show that there is a little more white blood cells than they would like to see, but that can be caused by his recent surgery. They want to watch him over the next 48 hours to see if anything grows out (bacteria).

They just took his temperature and it is a little over 102. They are now drawing blood, urine, and suctioning his gut to test for infection. If he has infection in his blood we go in immediately for a shunt removal and he will be back on EVD (external shunt) and in the hospital for at least 2 weeks. This would not be good!

Well, I will keep you updated on the outcome. I should know in the next few hours what they are finding. Poor baby! He hasn't slept since yesterday at 11:00am. I talked to Dr. Walker about all of this. He is confident that one of these times everything will just work right. He does not know how long it will take to get there. I also had a good talk with him about his development. He thinks that there will not be a problem with him cognitively. He will most likely have a little trouble with movement, but he doesn't expect it to be severe. He is concerned about his sight and thinks that there is a good chance that he doesn't see a whole lot. We have had a lot of the same feelings. We look forward to our eye doctor appt. in June. Hopefully, we will get in a little sooner, although it will still be a little shadey even then.

Well, this is just one more bump in the road. We will get through this like we have everything else. It is all in the Lord's hands and we trust Him completely!

Please keep us in your prayers! We love you all!
Love, Amy
