Well, yesterday was a crazy day. The Neuro surgeon called me yesterday afternoon to let me know that Dawson's fever was caused by an infection in his brain. The shunt was already full of infection. The infection is Spinal Menangitis. It is not chronic and will go away with the antibiotics help. The Surgeon asked for my permission to remove the shunt. They were not even going to make the trip to the Operation Room. They were going to do the surgery there in his bed. I of course gave my permission and it was done. They removed his shunt and put in another EVD (external shunt).
This is a pretty depressing set back. He will be another month. This means that he will be 6 months old when he comes home...IF there are not any other problems.
I went in today and he was quite upset. I guess his temperature has been up to 102.3
the infection is making him very uncomfortable. He is shaking a lot and we know it is neurological. His brain is very irritated by the infection. We are hoping that he doesn't start having seizures again. Poor little guy! He is only happy when he is being held. Today I spent a lot of time with him. Holding and loving him. He is so sweet and SOOOOOOO big. He is now 10lbs. 10oz. I just hope that when it is time to come home from the hospital he is not teething yet. He is just getting so big! We will definately have a lot of work and catching up to do when we get home.
Our plan is to just stay here until he can come home. I will go and meet with Jake's teacher and do some home schooling with Jake until we can get back home. We do have to go home this weekend for doctor appointments and we were planning on going on Wednesday. However, Ryan thinks he is starting to get a cold and if he is I cannot be here with Dawson so we will have to go home earlier. I hope that we don't all get sick, because I don't think I can stand to be away from Dawson for very long, and he really needs us there. He really needs us.
Anyway, I will keep you updated. I know I told you that I would post pictures. I think that we are going to have to wait until we go home. We cannot find a decent connection anywhere, and we didn't end up going down to Utah County today because we don't want to get anyone else sick if Ryan is sick. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, grandma's and grandpa's if you are healthy and everyone in your house is, please come and hold him while we are gone. Most of the time Dawson has great nurses that really love and take good care of him, but some days the nurse can't hold him and he lays in bed and cries. It breaks my heart!
Well, I will post pictures as soon as I can, and we love you all!
Love, The Lindstroms
